SUMMARY:Real-time Height-field Simulation of Sand and Water Mixtures
DESCRIPTION:Haozhe Su (Rutgers University, LightSpeed Studios); Siyu Zhang
and Zherong Pan (LightSpeed Studios); Mridul Aanjaneya (Rutgers Universit
y); and Xifeng Gao and Kui Wu (LightSpeed Studios)\n\nWe propose a height-
field-based real-time simulation method for sand and water mixtures. Inspi
red by the shallow-water assumption, our approach extends the governing eq
uations to handle two-phase flows of sand and water using height fields. O
ur depth-integrated governing equations can model the elastoplastic behavi
or of sand, as well as sand-water-mixing phenomena such as friction, diffu
sion, saturation, and momentum exchange. We further propose an operator-sp
litting time integrator that is both GPU-friendly and stable under moderat
e time step sizes. We have evaluated our method on a set of benchmark scen
arios involving large bodies of heterogeneous materials, where our GPU-bas
ed algorithm runs at real-time frame rates. Our method achieves a desirabl
e trade-off between fidelity and performance, bringing an unprecedentedly
immersive experience for real-time applications.\n\nRegistration Category:
