SUMMARY:High-Order Moment-Encoded Kinetic Simulation of Turbulent Flows
DESCRIPTION:Wei Li, Tongtong Wang, Zherong Pan, Xifeng Gao, and Kui Wu (Li
ghtSpeed Studios) and Mathieu Desbrun (Inria/X)\n\nKinetic solvers for inc
ompressible fluid simulation were designed to run efficiently on massively
parallel architectures such as GPUs. While these lattice Boltzmann solver
s have recently proven much faster and more accurate than common macroscop
ic Navier-Stokes-based solvers in graphics, it is always at the price of a
very large memory requirement: a mesoscopic discretization of statistical
mechanics typically requires over an order of magnitude more variables pe
r grid node than most fluid solvers in graphics. \nIn order to open up LBM
simulation to gaming and simulation software packages on commodity hardwa
re, we propose a High-Order Moment-Encoded LBM solver which we coined HOME
-LBM, requiring only the storage of a few moments per grid node, with litt
le to no loss of accuracy in the typical simulation scenarios encountered
in graphics. We show that our lightweight and lightspeed fluid solver requ
ires three times less memory and runs ten times faster than state-of-the-a
rt kinectic solvers, for a nearly-identical visual output.\n\nRegistration
