SUMMARY:"AI-Generated Imagery: A New Era for the `Readymade'"
DESCRIPTION:Amy Smith (Queen Mary University London) and Michael Cook (Kin
gs College London)\n\nThis paper examines the classification of digital im
ages created by generative AI systems and their emergence as art. The term
'art' defies precise definition, but there is a growing tendency to label
AI-generated images as such. The current discourse on AI-generated imager
y as art lacks the nuanced understanding of traditional artistic media. To
address this, we introduce some philosophical considerations. By applying
existing frameworks and theories of language, we argue that certain AI-ge
nerated images possess visual properties aligned with 'readymades,' qualif
ying them for consideration as art.\n\nRegistration Category: Full Access,
